AMP: New Look, New Taste, Same Sub-Par Ingredients

Amp; it’s a term used often by eccentrics and extremists to describe their excited mood, and for good reason too. The phrase was coined as a common abbreviation for amphetamines, which well, get you amped, go figure huh. Regardless, a few years back Mountain Dew took a step in the right direction to appeal to their more die-hard consumers with a new product line with a similar name.

Well energy-fiends, it’s been 7 years …

Spike Energy Shot

Right on the heels of Spike Shotgun comes Spike Energy Shot - well… a double shot actually.

The small bottles contain 4.25 fluid ounces (125 mls) of non-carbonated hyper-caffeinated sweetness. Now, according to the nutrition label - this thing contains 175mg per serving - and two servings per bottle. So - 350mg caffeine in half a cup. That’s quite a punch.

Given that most energy drinks around the world measure up at 80mg …

Maxxed Energy Pop

Is it a drink or is it a lollipop?

Maxxed is a caffeinated lollipop that is packaged inside a can…

It has 40mg of caffeine along with all the other goodies such as Taurine, Glucuronolactone, Guarana, and Panax Ginseng.

Apart from that it’s pretty much just sugar.

What’s bizarre is that you can only buy hats and T-shirts from the Maxxed store (so who knows how you get a hold of the lollipops?

McDonald’s Coffee is Weak and Generally Not That Impressive

I just had to get that off my chest.

I don’t get a chance to eat there too often, so I don’t know exactly when they started this whole iced coffee bit. I tried one this morning and was shocked–like, shocked to the point of audibly gasping–at how big this cup of coffee was.  For two dollars I got freaking a gallon of coffee. This cup would easily be 55 or 65 dollars at Starbucks. Easily.

So here’s a piece if my morning …

Engobi: Caffeinated Snacks

Engobi “Energy Go Bites” are a new highly caffeinated range of snacks. They are a kind of chip - but with unusual flavors such as “Cinnamon Surge” and “Lemon Lift”.

Now here’s the crunch - a 1.5 ounce bag contains 140mg caffeine. That’s a lot of caffeine for a little bag of chips.

How they manage to disguise the bitterness of caffeine - without burying it in sugar is beyond me.

Large Review of Caffeine Intake Concludes: It’s Okay…

The IFIC has published a large review of caffeine research. It’s conclusion:

Moderate intake of 300 mg/day (about three cups of coffee per day) of caffeine does not cause adverse health effects in healthy adults, although some groups, including those with hypertension and the elderly, may be more vulnerable. Also, regular consumers of coffee and other caffeinated beverages may experience some undesirable, but mild, short-lived symptoms if they stop consuming caffeine, particularly if the cessation is abrupt. However, there is

Anabolic Leucine Stack: Anyone?

Has anyone tried this stuff? This is day two for me and I feel surprisingly good considering it’s mainly caffeine (195 mgs. Woot!). I’m usually not a fan of coffee because it makes me all sketchy and fast-talky and basically a pain in the ass. Slightly less so with energy drinks, which is why I usually opt for the can instead of the cup with the little sleeve thing. I’ve always figured the difference must be all the glucoronos …

Oops. Energy Fiend Got Broken.

Sorry but we lost a few comments from the last 3-4 days. And a few updates I’d made to the caffeine database.

The wordpress software that Energy Fiend sits on broke all the fancy-schmancy caffeine database code etc that we had integrated into it.

Everything seems to be going okay now.
